Even in the worst of economic conditions, some manufacturers always seem to ride out the storms better than others. A good example of that might be Magnum Products.The company, which manufactures a range of smaller equipment, much of it for the rental and light construction industry, is adding another 70,000 sq.ft. to its existing 50,000 sq.ft. facility that serves as the headquarters for manufacturing and administration. The Berlin, Wis.-based company is more than doubling its size in order to house its expanding product lines, which include: new mobile generators, light towers, water trailers and power buggies, all sold under the Magnum brand name. "We looked at many different ideas, including articulated loaders and various other concepts. What we ended up with was really two machines in one. If you have situations where you''re in very tight quarters and need that skid-steer function, they have that option. When you want to be out on grass or some other surface that you don''t want disturbed, you can switch into all-wheel steer mode. There is so much versatility, it''s like having two machines in one.And Bobcat managed to develop two machines in one while not reinventing the wheel, according to Chuck Krause, senior development engineer, new products group. "The basic drivetrain is the same as on our 363 loader," he said. "It has the same chain case, the same drive motors, same drive sprocket, same driven sprocket. The changes all take place on getting the power from the driven sprocket out to the axle." * I use a 4.5-kilowatt portable welder with a Kohler motor for backup power at the house. It''s not quiet, and it uses too much fuel, but it works well.* I use a Generac 4-kilowatt gas generator to run a freezer, refrigerator, lights and to energize a fence during power outages. It''s just big enough to power a 2-horsepower air compressor.* I bought a 60-kilowatt diesel-powered automatic generator in 1994 when we put up new hog barns. Previously I had a 40-kilowatt PTO generator. Trouble was, it took 15 minutes to get a tractor going and everything hooked up. And we didn''t have an alarm system, so if nobody was home we were in trouble. The automatic setup, including a 400-amp transfer switch and other wiring, cost $20,000.
