The first of the Cat engine-powered units were built earlier this year and by late spring were in full production. Like all of the Piggy Back models, the new PB50 and PB65 are designed to mount on the rear of a heavy-duty truck during transport, then self-deploy in minutes through use of the company''s Easy Hitch hook mounting system. What applications present the biggest challenge in terms of machine productivity?Carl/Ringfeder: Industrial applications, such as highly corrosive environments requiring special stainless steels, are the biggest challenges. Applications in which a locking device is dimensionally too large to fit into a component, or in which the torque requirements are beyond the capability of any device on the market, can also present a challenge.Blair/Ruland: The bolt pattern on locking devices can bring many challenges. Because of the time required to loosen and tighten the bolts, locking devices are not well suited for applications that require regular adjustments. Confined areas can also pose problems because of limited access to the bolt heads. Another challenge for locking devices is equipment with extended length shafts, which can be difficult to service because of the disassembly required, especially if the shaft is supported at both ends. "Pressure at the fuel injectors has increased from 15,000 psi a few years ago to nearly 30,000 psi on new engines," says Pete Brown of Caterpillar''s engine applications group. "To get these higher pressures, fuel pumps are built to closer tolerances. Dirt in the fuel is like sandpaper, and it will definitely cause greater wear."To meet the challenge, Cat''s newest engines are equipped with increased water-sensing and fuel-filtering capabilities as well as a filter on the fuel tank breather. Primary fuel filters, once designed to remove 150-micron particles, are now rated for 10 microns. Secondary filters, once sized to remove 10-micron particles, are now rated for 2 microns. And the new high-efficiency filters can remove up to 99% of particles above those rated sizes compared to the 50% efficiency of older nominal filters. Filter improvements are also available for storage tanks. "Tank filters are typically rated at 10 microns nominal, so they take out 50% of particles greater than 10 microns in size. Tank filters with higher efficiencies, ratings down to 2 microns and water-absorbing capabilities, are now available," says Gall.
